How Roberto Ruiz Tapped Into Community to Fuel His Version of the American Dream

The American dream has different meanings for everyone. For some, it’s the ability to pursue their aspirations, while others seek freedom. Regardless of what they are searching for, the path to achieving their dreams and goals looks distinct. In reality, there is no wrong way to accomplish things.

Roberto Ruiz‘s version of the American dream mirrors that of many immigrants to the United States. As a Chick-fil-A owner-operator, his sense of community has been a driving force in his success. 

His love for his community has guided him to make decisions that give back meaningfully and seek to uplift.

To Ruiz, the American dream “embodies” opportunity and the ability to grow

Many come to the U.S. for various reasons. But, one grounding sentiment among them is the need for opportunities they might not find in their home countries. 

The entrepreneur tells Latinidad Collective, “To me, the American dream embodies the promise of opportunity and growth, regardless of background or circumstance. It’s the belief that through hard work, continuous learning, and determination, anyone can achieve success and build a better life for their family and their community.”

But, like many immigrants, Ruiz understands that the road to success isn’t always linear or easy.

“As an immigrant entrepreneur pursuing business in the U.S., I have faced many barriers, which I have [overcome] by learning as much as possible to be the best version of myself. Language was the first barrier I faced when I started school in the U.S.,” he notes. 

Ruiz continues, “With caring teachers and hard work, I learned English, which opened more doors for me, but I have always kept my Spanish-language ability to [communicate] with my family and friends in my community.”

The Mexican entrepreneur admits that over time, his “perception of success” was influenced by paying it forward to his community. Something he feels aligns with Chick-fil-A’s culture.

“As I’ve built my career, my perception of success has been deeply rooted in providing a positive influence in my neighborhood. The Chick-fil-A culture emphasizes a definition of success; it prioritizes serving others, fostering meaningful connections within the community, and creating a positive impact beyond financial gains,” he asserts.

Ruiz adds that his restaurant, located on East Fordham Road in the Bronx, participates in the Chick-fil-A Shared Table® program. The initiative redirects “surplus food to local soup kitchens, shelters, food banks, and nonprofits in need.”

He details, “As a Chick-fil-A owner-operator, I’m committed to creating opportunities for economic empowerment and advancement, offering employment, mentorship, and encouragement for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly those who may doubt their potential.”

“I want to show them that their dreams are within reach and let my journey stand as [a] testament to that reality,” he continues.

For many Latinos and Latines, their family often influences how they move through life. If they come from a family of fellow business owners like Ruiz, they will likely embody many of those aspects.

“I come from a family that is very united and has a strong work ethic. The values I learned from my family are ones that I carry with me every day, at work and with my own family,” he explains.  

Ruiz adds, “We lead with compassion, focus, and always support our communities.”

The Mexican entrepreneur details how his papá and tía are both “successful business owners.” That how working alongside them growing up gave him a “hands-on experience.”

“My dad and aunt have been successful business owners in the real estate and landscaping industries for decades in America. During my high school and college years, I actively contributed to their respective business operations while gaining valuable insights into business management and development,” he notes. 

Ruiz explained, “This hands-on experience highlighted the importance of prioritizing employees’ well-being, ensuring a positive customer experience, and actively participating in [the] community.” 

The greatest lesson he learned from them? How intentional collaboration breeds success.

“The greatest lesson I learned is that a business’ success hinges on fostering a supportive work environment, delivering outstanding customer service, and making meaningful contributions to the community,” he maintains.

But, if he had to give advice to other aspiring immigrant entrepreneurs, he’d encourage them to tap into their support systems and “stay focused.”

“I would encourage all immigrants to work hard, stay focused, and surround yourself with people who support you and want to see you succeed. It may not be an easy journey, but it is worth it,” he concludes.
